Use case
Turn a spare iPad or tablet into a digital media frame
A spare iPad or tablet makes a better media frame than most of the ones you can buy. Install LumiFrame, dock it on a stand, and it becomes an always-current shared display that updates itself as you and the people you share with add memories. No new hardware to buy, no extra cost.

Why a spare iPad makes a great media frame
Dedicated frames like Aura and Nixplay are nice, but a tablet you already own has a sharper screen, more storage, and no extra purchase. Repurposing it puts a perfectly good device back to use and gives everyone you share with a display that updates on its own.
- A screen that is usually bigger and higher-resolution than a budget frame
- Photos and video that refresh automatically as invited people add them
- Everything runs on the tablet itself, with no second device needed
- No new device to buy and nothing extra to plug in
How to set it up (about 5 minutes)
- Install LumiFrame on the spare tablet and sign in.
- Create an album or open one you already have, tap play, and choose Add Frame when asked. The tablet is now your frame.
- On the tablet, open Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock and set it to Never while charging.
- Dock the tablet on a stand near power, open LumiFrame, and start the slideshow.
- Invite people to the album so their photos and videos appear on the frame automatically.
Which iPads and tablets work
LumiFrame runs on iOS 15.5+ and Android 7+, which reaches back to the iPad Air 2. Most iPads from the last several years handle slideshows, transitions, and video comfortably. The honest test: if the device still feels responsive in everyday apps, it will make a great frame. If it already struggles, expect the same with always-on video.
Make it a shared frame
The point of repurposing the tablet is not just a slideshow. It is a living display. Invite people to a shared album and their new memories show up on the frame on their own, whether the tablet is in a kitchen, a studio, or a reception area. You decide who can contribute and what each person can see.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn a spare iPad into a digital media frame?
Yes. Install LumiFrame on the iPad, sign in, start a slideshow, and choose Add Frame when asked. Leave it on a stand and the iPad becomes an always-current media frame, with no second device and no new hardware to buy.
Which iPads and tablets work as a media frame?
LumiFrame supports iOS 15.5+ and Android 7+, reaching back to the iPad Air 2. Most iPads from the last several years run it comfortably. Devices that already struggle with everyday apps will also struggle with video slideshows and transitions, so pick a tablet that still feels responsive.
Does the screen stay on as a media frame?
Set the device Auto-Lock to "Never" while it is on a charger and keep LumiFrame in the foreground. The app is built for always-on display, so the slideshow keeps running while the tablet is docked.
Can people you share with add photos and videos to the frame remotely?
Yes. Invite people to a shared album and their photos and videos appear on the frame automatically, even when the frame is in another room or another house. You stay in control of who can contribute.
Is it free to use a spare tablet as a media frame?
Yes. The free tier includes one managed frame and 2GB of storage. Premium and Elite add video playback, TV casting, live event displays, and cloud imports if you want more.
